Awareness of Tunnel Closure Due to Heavy Rains
Vol.5 Issue 4
According to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, to date Oklahoma City has had a total of 27.13 inches of rainfall in 2019.

This Spring, the Oklahoma City metro area has experienced record rainfall amounts. As a result of this rainfall, the Aeronautical Center has encountered never-seen-before moisture infiltration in the tunnel that runs from the CAMI building to the Headquarters and ARB buildings. The Office of Facility Management is currently working to ensure that all areas in the tunnel area are professionally cleaned. In the meantime and during the cleaning, the tunnel from the CAMI building to intersection where the tunnel “forks” off to either the Headquarters building or ARB will be closed to all Aeronautical Center personnel.

This action is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that MMAC personnel who may have allergies do not experience symptoms as a result of the moisture in the tunnel. As a reminder, molds are a common component of dusts in the air and are found almost everywhere. The vast majority are not hazardous to humans and reactions to molds vary from person-to-person, but some people are allergic. A person's reaction to mold depends on their sensitivity and other health conditions, the amount of mold present, length of exposure and the type of mold. Additional information regarding mold hazards can be found on OSHA’s website.

We anticipate that the cleaning activities will be accomplished in the next couple of weeks and that the tunnel will be open immediately following. The tunnels will be made available if we have any severe weather threats during this time. Additional correspondence regarding the cleaning and/or emergency procedures in the event of an increased severe weather risk will be communicated via broadcast message.
