Many Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System

All of us have experienced various emotions these past months regarding COVID-19 and the many directives that we have received regarding the prevention of transmission. These directives, rightfully so, continue to change as time goes by.

First, we didn’t need to be concerned with human-to-human transmission, then there was the need to wear a mask and gloves and maintain six-feet of social distancing. Like many of you, I was reading conflicting information that kept me a bit on edge as to what was truth and what could’ve been labeled panic. In fact, after the mask recommendation, I saw where our Surgeon General said that a healthy person should not wear a mask. Stating in fact, that wearing a mask weakens our immune system and does very little to prevent cross contamination.

Wearing gloves? I didn’t obey that one. With my medical background, I knew once the gloves, like your hands, were contaminated with a pathogen, anything else you touched like your face or steering wheel, would be affected. All of us have to come to our own conclusion on how to mitigate getting infected with this nasty virus and decide for ourselves what is best for our peace of mind.

Personally, I have always recommended focusing on wellness and disease prevention; washing hands frequently throughout the day and eating foods and taking supplements that are proven to strengthen one’s immune system. So, regardless of your methods to mitigate the spread of this virus, know that you have a choice and the freedom to incorporate certain activities of daily living, and know that vitamins and supplements are scientifically proven to boost your immune system. These activities and certain supplements will naturally help ward off and fight the various bacteria and viruses in our environment.

I would think and hope that everyone would want to know how to strengthen their immune system, after these past several weeks of obeying the "stay at home" directives, wearing a mask in public, and washing your hands often to prevent the COVID-19 from spreading. These directives have certainly been helpful in reducing the number of deaths, according to the predictive models initially used to recommend these strong social guidelines.

However, for now and into the future, it is highly recommended that a lifestyle of wellness and healthy living choices is the best way to significantly reduce our chances of being infected by any virus or pathogen. Some simple and effective ways to strengthen your immune system include getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Your body heals while you sleep. This sounds so simple, yet many people are so busy they often neglect getting enough rest. Paying attention to this one will immediately pay other health dividends as well.

Drink plenty of water. The recommended amount has not changed but compliance is still rather low. Begin a new habit of drinking eight 8 fluid ounce glasses (minimum) per day. I recommend half a person’s body weight in ounces. If you weigh 200 lbs. then 100 ounces of water should be your target – spread out through the day. Water certainly keeps your body hydrated and also helps with keeping your body in an alkaline state. If you are dehydrated, you will feel sluggish and more prone to sickness. Remember, water delivers nutrients to your cells and carries waste away from them to keep your body functioning more optimally. Your body composition is 60% water, and it’s even higher with critical organs like your brain, heart and kidneys. It just makes sense to drink good, clean, pH balanced water to look and feel healthy. Coffee, tea and soft drinks do not count as water. I’ve been asked this before.

In addition to water and a healthy diet full of vegetables and fruit that contain many phytonutrients and antioxidants, there is much research that supports the supplementation of various vitamins to strengthen your immune system. Some of the vitamins and supplements that are recommended to strengthen your immune system include Vitamins A, C, D, E, Selenium and Zinc. You can do an online search for the recommended dosage of these if you want to include any of these supplements in your daily regimen.

To touch on just a few of these supplements, I will begin with Vitamin D. Vitamin D is critical for optimal brain function, immune system function, as well as bone and muscle health. Vitamin D is naturally produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight, but it can also be absorbed through Vitamin D-rich foods as well as supplements. Vitamin D-3 is now known as a brain hormone and is converted by your body into Vitamin D for other biological and health benefits, and is why I personally recommend this version of Vitamin D.

Zinc is another supplement that has received a lot of attention lately, when we learned that when it is combined with HCQ and Z-PAC, it has been very effective at combatting COVID-19. Zinc is known to play a central role in the immune system and also functions as an antioxidant.

As you may already know or have discovered by reading this article, there are many things that you can do to strengthen your immune system naturally, to prevent sickness and disease from coming near your body. I highly encourage you, especially considering the eye-opening and alarming experience that we have had from this world-wide pandemic, to evaluate your lifestyle, sleep, and dietary habits; acknowledging the tremendous impact they have on your immune system and overall health.

I will always encourage you to do more personal research to bring greater peace of mind, happiness, good health and a strong immune system.
